As Sure As The Sea

TaylorAdams_ArtistStudio_2020.JPG

My mind has been drifting to the coast in my recent work, finding myself reflecting on the patterns created where sea meets land. No matter the shore or season, waves rush in and retreat. A steady constant, like the rhythm of your breath, it’s a soothing truth that even amongst change we can always connect back to this.

We experience landscapes in layers of color, texture and gesture. Each small movement and sound compiles to create a place that is uniquely its own. I love abstraction because it allows me to translate each of those elements.

Mixing ink and dropping it upon my panel, I recall the nuanced spectrum of blue, green and grey found in swirling water. The crunch of shell beneath your feet echoes as I sand down my surface to pull out texture. I press graphite to my panel in small patterned movements, like the flock of birds dotting their silhouettes across the sky.

With each strand of thread I wrap upon organic layers, I orchestrate an order among this dialogue, finding balance and the structure of a horizon line.

My work revisits paths of thought and places explored. Just as our understanding of place unfolds over time, my understanding of each painting unfolds with every layer. Using memory to create visual dialogue, I invite you in to the conversation. It is my hope that you can find your own memories too, recalling places of rest, awe and inspiration.
